What are annotations?
Annotations are the highlights and notes you leave on articles. A note can belong to the whole article, which works on every plan, or to a passage you highlighted, which is a Pro feature.
Every article you annotate is collected under Saved > Annotations, and the article itself shows its highlights and notes in an Annotations panel above the text.
Highlights and notes
A highlight marks a passage of the article text. You select the words and click Highlight text in the menu that appears under the selection, as How do I create a highlight? explains. A highlight can carry a note, for example why the passage matters to you.
A note on the whole article has no passage behind it. You add it with Add note below the article text, and How do I add a note to an article? walks you through it.
Where your annotations appear
Inside the article, the Annotations panel above the text lists every highlight and note with your picture and name, the note, the highlighted text and the date, with Add note or Edit, Delete and Scroll to highlight. On desktop a pencil marker sits beside each highlight in the text, and clicking it shows the note with Remove highlight and Add note or Edit note.

All annotated articles are listed under Saved > Annotations, newest annotation first, as Where can I find my annotations? describes. Your notes are searchable together with the article, and with Readwise connected, your highlights and their notes are sent there too.
Highlights stay in place
When you highlight an article, Inoreader keeps your own copy of its text, so a later edit by the publisher doesn't move your highlights. The copy is released once you remove your last highlight on the article.
Annotations in a team
Team members can share a highlight or a note with the team through Highlight for Team and Make visible to Team members. What's the difference between highlights, notes and comments? explains how shared annotations differ from comments.
Notes on whole articles work on every plan, highlights and the notes on them need Pro or higher, and team sharing needs a Team plan, as the Annotations page shows, and the iOS and Android apps have an Annotations section too.
