What can developers use the API for?
The API lets your own code do what you do in Inoreader: list feeds, folders and tags, read the articles of any feed, folder, tag or state, get unread counts, mark articles as read, tag or star them, add and edit feeds, rename or delete tags, and create monitoring feeds. Typical uses are a reader app for a platform without one, a script that publishes the articles you tag, or a dashboard fed from your folders.
Read your account
Stream contents returns the articles of a stream: a single feed, a folder or tag, or a state such as read, starred, broadcast, annotated, liked or saved web pages. You choose how many items come back, 20 by default and up to 100, oldest or newest first, a start time and whether to leave out read articles, and a continuation token pages through the rest. Each article comes with its id, title, dates, URL, HTML content, author, origin feed and categories, and on request your annotations and Intelligence summaries, as JSON or Atom. Item IDs returns only the ids, Unread counts the counters, and Feeds list, Folder/Tag list and User information describe the account.
Change your account
Edit tag marks articles as read, stars them or assigns tags, and Mark all as read clears a whole stream. Add feed and Edit feed subscribe to a feed and change it, Rename tag and Delete tag manage your tags, and Stream preferences set changes a stream's settings. Monitoring feeds can be created and deleted too, within your plan's limit.
How access works
Requests go to https://www.inoreader.com/reader/api/0, with GET to read and POST to change. The user signs in with OAuth 2.0 and a scope of read, which covers Zone 1 only, or read write. Reading counts against Zone 1 and changes against Zone 2, with 100 requests a day in each for a Pro application. Does Inoreader provide API access? explains registration, and the developer portal documents every method.
Alternatives
The Zapier, IFTTT and n8n integrations are built on this API, and an output feed publishes a folder or tag as RSS or JSON with no code. Third-party reader apps built on the API are listed under Support > Mobile apps > Third-party apps.
API access is included in Pro and Team plans, while Free accounts get it only for public apps on platforms where Inoreader has none.
